PE (polyethylene) is the most common plastic in the world, exceeding 90 million tons in annual production. It was developed in 1933, proving essential to the development of modern plastic materials, which are so crucial to life today. From a chemical point of view, the structure of polyethylene is very simple; therefore, it is possible to produce it in a relatively easy and inexpensive way. According to its density, polyethylene is classified as two major types: low-density (LDPE) and high-density (HDPE), while a third form is known as linear low-density PE (LLDPE).
Both types of PE are manipulated easily by plastic-processing technologies, resulting in products of various shapes and sizes. In general, polyethylene boasts excellent strength, toughness and ductility; products may be transparent or coloured with pigments. The methods commonly employed are extrusion (2D products) and injection-moulding (3D products).
The best-known polyethylene applications include:
- Flexible packaging – bags for fresh and frozen foodstuffs, shopping bags, extensible foils.
- Solid packages – bottles for detergents and cosmetics, canisters, barrels, large-size containers.
- Everyday products – small kitchen dishes.
- Tubes and pipes
Polyethylene may be recycled. It is widely present in communal waste, thus there are efforts to sort (a yellow container for sorted waste) and recycle it.

PP (polypropylene) is the second most frequently used material in Europe. Its share in the consumption of plastic ranges at about 20%. In terms of features and applications, polypropylene is similar to polyethylene; hence, both polymers are classified in the same group - polyolefins. Unlike PE, though, PP features higher strength and consistency. Since its temperature of melt is higher, it exhibits good stability as a consequence. The consistency of PP imparts good dimensional stability to resultant products.
Polypropylene is found almost everywhere: in packaging materials, household appliances, clothing, means of transport and numerous other things. Over half of global PP production is given over to packaging. It is also used in technical applications.
It is utilized to make such items as:
- Packaging – flexible foils, pots for dairy products and beverage machines, moulded trays, caps for packaging, bottle caps, bags, notebook covers.
- Textiles – fibres (thermal underwear, carpets), strings, ropes, binding strips.
- Pipes – tubes of various diameters for water and other liquids.
- Automotive parts – bumpers, tanks, cable sheathing.
- Consumer goods – ball-point pens, measuring jugs, trays, small items including for promotional purposes.
- PP is also used to produce plastic-based currency.

EVAC (a copolymer of ethylene with vinyl acetate) is a material distinguished in strength and transparency; it is soft and flexible like rubber. It is manufactured with vinyl acetate at a content of 2 to 40 per cent. By increasing the portion of vinyl acetate, gains are seen in transparency, adhesiveness, softness and resistance to cracking. Its natural, non-slip characteristic is an interesting feature, making it beneficial in applications such as non-slip pads for floors, cabinets, shelves and drawers.
EVAC is resistant to mechanical stress and UV radiation. It is employed in the production of various sports equipment – ski boots, bicycle seats, boxing gloves and helmets, as part of outdoor accessories and in boots (Wellingtons), etc. This material can also be expanded, making it suitable for padding for beds.

Plastic waste processing (LLDPE, LDPE, HDPE, PP, EVAC) Fatra, a.s. – a long-standing plastics processing company in the Czech Republic – expanded its production facilities in 2015 by processing internal and external plastic waste on a new re-granulating line. We supply polyolefin re-granulates and recyclates produced on modern recycling line, plastic waste processing from LLDPE, LDPE, HDPE, PP, EVAC materials, and plastic waste buyout. The collection of plastic waste, its purchase and our reuse facility are entered in the register maintained by the Ministry of the Environment, under Plant No. IČZZ00744.

Recycling plastics involves a process for reusing residual or waste plastics, converting them into useful products, sometimes in a form completely different to how they were originally. The product of this recycling process is known as regranulate(s) or recyclates.
